The bite sent a shiver through Estrella, who quickly pinched Jason’s waist in retaliation. Despite the pinch, Jason far from let her go. Instead, he pulled her even closer into his

embrace.

On the other end of the phone, Kristin couldn’t help but beam with joy, her voice bright and cheery as she inquired, “Estrella, you must be swamped with the year-end rush, right? Jason’s been just as busy. I haven’t seen him around in a good while.”

Estrella found herself at a loss for words. After all, when Jason wasn’t working, he was with her. Trying to change the subject, she asked with a light laugh, “Did you need something?”

Kristin, seizing the moment, cut straight to the chase: “Estrella, you’ve come back this year, so why not spend New Year’s with the Nelson family? Plus, ever since you’ve been away, Jason hasn’t celebrated New Year’s. He’s been as elusive as a ghost.”

Before Estrella could respond, Kristin continued, “If you don’t come, I’m afraid he’ll be all over the place again and won’t make it back.”

Estrella understood what the Nelson family meant very well and was deeply moved by their acceptance of Isaac without knowing his identity. However, her parents and grandparents had not given their approval, and the elders in the family were completely unaware of how close she and Jason had become. Otherwise, they would have come over long ago to straighten things out.

After a moment’s contemplation and just as she was about to decline, Kristin excitedly added, “Just come back for the New Year’s Eve dinner, like old times. Grayson, Thomas, Jesse, and the others will be there. Bring Isaac along too.”

With Kristin pushing so enthusiastically, mentioning that Grayson, Thomas and Jesse would be there, Estrella found it hard to refuse. It would seem as if she were putting on airs, distancing herself from the others. So, with a nod, Estrella agreed, “Alright, I’ll bring Isaac along.”

At her agreement, Kristin lit up with happiness, her voice bursting with warmth, “Then it’s settled. I’ll be waiting for your return.”

Behind Estrella, Jason’s grin grew wider as he heard her consent to the New Year’s dinner, unable to hide his joy. He hugged Estrella a little tighter, his face close to hers as he whispered, “Mom sure knows how to pull strings, doesn’t she?”

To persuade Estrella to come for dinner, Kristin had invited the whole crew. No easy feat. For his happiness, Kristin was truly going all out.

Hearing Jason’s contentment, Estrella turned to look at him with a playful glance, “It’s not easy having a son like you. If Isaac ever gives me this much trouble, I’ll let him have it.”
