Chapter 41:

The chill outside the emergency room was palpable.

Kristopher and Darren positioned themselves at opposite ends of the hallway, arms folded, expressions unreadable.

Periodically, their eyes met, adding to the palpable tension.

A nurse passing by caught the hostile atmosphere and reminded them firmly, “Both of you are adults. Behave accordingly! No fighting in these halls! Your actions have already harmed patients. Another incident, and I’m calling the police.”

Both men exhaled sharply and looked away.

Moments later, the ER doors burst open as a doctor stepped out, her expression grave.

Both men moved toward her in unison.

“How is she?”

“How’s Belinda?”

The doctor’s voice was cold. “She’s dealing with severe abdominal pain. The blow to her stomach did significant damage. We’ve managed her care, but the pain lingers.”

She eyed the two imposing men. “One of you can assist the nurse in moving her to her room.”
