Rebecca had worried that Jeffrey would make her life hard. But today, Jeffrey hadn’t spoken to her or even looked her way. He acted like she was just another face in the crowd at PrimePlay Technologies.

Since he ignored her at work, there was no reason he’d make a scene at dinner.

“I’ll come get you as soon as I have Samuel,” lan said, not wanting to leave her by herself. “Just stall for time and don’t go

in yet.”

Just as Rebecca was about to say something, Elmer showed up. “Rebecca, why are you still out here?”

“It’s my friend calling,” Rebecca said, lifting her phone as an excuse. “It’s sort of urgent.”

“No matter how urgent, nothing comes before your new job,” Elmer said with a polite but firm smile. “The executives will be here soon, and as the new hire, you wouldn’t want to keep them waiting.”

Rebecca tightened her grip around her phone. Back when she was with Jeffrey, he’d always bring her in last to those company dinners, and no one dared say a thing.

Back then, she never had to deal with office politics or please the right people. But now, as Elmer said, she was just an employee.

Getting fired wouldn’t be the worst, but if the higher–ups made her life miserable with petty tricks and constant trouble,

that would be a nightmare.

She dipped her head. “I’ll go in right away.”

Elmer nodded, giving her a gentle push to hurry up.

lan caught everything over the phone while driving and jumped in immediately, his voice firm, “Don’t listen to him, Rebecca. Stay put and wait for me, okay?”

“It’s not like before. I should probably head in,” Rebecca said, not wanting to end up with more trouble than just Jeffrey down the line. “Just text me when you get here. If things get dicey, I’ll fake being sick, and you can come grab me.”

Worry crept into lan’s voice.

Rebecca said briskly, “Alright, I’m hanging up.”

She put her phone away and walked toward the private room Elmer had mentioned. When she entered, only Elmer was inside. Noticing she seemed a bit uneasy, Elmer called her name, “Rebecca.”

“Mm,” Rebecca responded softly,
