Three months ago, when his family said he was old enough to get married, they casually talked about setting him up with Yvonne Jones as his fiancée. He didn’t bother to object and just let them do whatever they wanted -after all, it wasn’t like this was their first time pulling this kind of stunt.

They were always just acting on a whim, he thought.

One day they’d decide this girl was perfect, and the next it’d be someone else entirely.

“Steve?” Yvonne tentatively called out.

“Let’s wait until you’ve had a couple days to get over jet lag,” Steve brushed her off lightly. “Just focus on resting right now.”

Yvonne responded immediately, “Okay!”

Once Stephen walked out of the room with his phone, Karen finally let out a breath–only for her mind to keep spinning with all the ways she was still tied to him.

If she really wanted to break free, she’d have to get her little sister, who’d just started college, out from under his watch. But college wasn’t like high school, where transferring was simple–her sister was locked into four years at that university.

Which meant…

She’d be tangled up with him for at least another four years.

Just as Karen was getting lost in her worries, Rebecca texted: [Are you okay?]

Rebecca picked this moment on purpose–by now, anything important should’ve been settled, and she was always, ready to lend a hand if Karen needed it.

Ding!

Karen replied: [I’m fine, don’t worry.]

Rebecca started typing another message, but paused. Unlike with Jessica Scott, she wasn’t close enough with Karen to keep chatting after Karen had already said she was fine–it almost felt rude to push any further.

After thinking it over,

she just replied: [Alright then.]

After that day, Rebecca never saw Karen again, nor did they message each other. It was as if that whole deep heart–to–heart had just been a passing dream.

Another two weeks slipped by in the blink of an eye.

After Rebecca made several trips to Riverside City, she finally landed that project, but the one in Jelasburg fell
