“Maybe we shouldn’t have lost them back there,” Tom said suddenly as they got close to the hospital. When you coast for too long, your guard really does drop.

Rebecca blinked at him, puzzled.

Mark raised an eyebrow at him, equally confused.

“It’s not like we’re up to anything classified,” Tom said, looking dead serious. “If they wanna tail us, let them. I’ve got moves and I know my way around a car–trust me, whatever they pull, I’ll make sure you both stay safe.”

Rebecca gave it some thought.

He had a point.

“Now that they know you’ve got a bodyguard with serious driving chops, they’re not likely to come at us the same way again. Odds are, they’ll switch tactics,” Tom said, acting like it was some hard–earned wisdom.

Rebecca and Mark exchanged a glance, both clearly thinking, ‘He’s just finding new ways to brag about himself.‘

Honestly, the level of driving he showed earlier was nothing to write home about–any regular cab driver in Jelasburg could’ve pulled that off easy. It wouldn’t impress anyone around here.

“Ms. Jensen, ever thought about making me your Swiss army knife bodyguard?” Tom joked, grinning. “Just double my paycheck, put me in charge of Mark, and you get the ultimate bodyguard package. How’s that for a deal?”

Rebecca just tuned him out, lowering her head and scrolling through the tech director’s latest updates.

Tom kept at it. “Seriously, you’re not even a little tempted?”

“I’m seriously awesome, you know,” he insisted.

“Come on, up my salary–you won’t regret it, promise!”

“Trust me, I’m a total bargain–you’re gonna love having me around,” Tom added with a cheeky grin.

“You should be grateful I’m not docking your pay for bugging the boss,” Mark retorted, clearly unimpressed. “Run your mouth one more time and I’ll personally hit mute.”

Tom clenched his jaw.

He knew Mark meant it–he’d go through with it for sure.

‘Think he’s all that just ‘cause he can fight? Give it some time, I’ll round up a dozen guys and show him who’s boss, Tom grumbled to himself.
