Rebecca nodded, “Everything’s going well.”

“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you,” Rebecca said.

“Was it always that way for you, or did you just start thinking differently?” Rebecca asked.

She didn’t really need an answer, not really. Some things just gnawed at her deep down. If she didn’t get clarity, she’d toss and turn at night, stuck in that uneasy mood.

Jeffrey answered with conviction, “It’s never been like that. You’ve always been strong and capable in my eyes.”

Rebecca thought to herself, ‘He’s just saying that to comfort me.‘ But honestly, maybe splitting up wasn’t so bad after all.

If Andrea hadn’t come into the picture, she’d probably still be Jeffrey’s stay–at–home wife. For the next five or even ten years, he might have kept doting on her like always. But then what?

He wouldn’t cheat, though. He was the kind of guy who was stubbornly loyal to his promises.

But eventually, there wouldn’t be any love left between them. They’d go from sharing everything to having nothing to talk about, from being each other’s one and only to being just someone on the sidelines. From truly mattering to each other, to being nothing important at all. From saying “I love you” to just “I’m busy.”
