Rebecca nodded, “Everything’s going well.”

Jeffrey said, “If you need any help, just let me know.”

“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you,” Rebecca said.

Rebecca kept her voice steady, but there was an earnest look in her eyes. “Do you see me as someone you’ve always had to support? Like I’m just the girl who needs taking care of, who couldn’t make it on her own?”

“No,” Jeffrey replied.

“Was it always that way for you, or did you just start thinking differently?” Rebecca asked.

She didn’t really need an answer, not really. Some things just gnawed at her deep down. If she didn’t get clarity, she’d toss and turn at night, stuck in that uneasy mood.

Jeffrey answered with conviction, “It’s never been like that. You’ve always been strong and capable in my eyes.”

Rebecca thought to herself, ‘He’s just saying that to comfort me.‘ But honestly, maybe splitting up wasn’t so bad after all.

If Andrea hadn’t come into the picture, she’d probably still be Jeffrey’s stay–at–home wife. For the next five or even ten years, he might have kept doting on her like always. But then what?

From truly mattering to each other, to being nothing important at all. From saying “I love you” to just “I’m busy.”
