Chapter 5

The walk to Gamma Abel's office feels longer than it should, mouly because my

brain won't shut up

Why am I doing this again?

I'm halfway down the hall when the answer hits me guilt. Stupid, nagging, bleeding-heart guilt.

It doesn't matter that I don't know who Enoch really is. It doesn't matter that his aura practically screams danger, even with the amnesia. Nope. My conscience has decided I'm responsible for him, which is just great.

"He'll leave when his wound heals, and his memory comes back," I mutter under my breath. "That's the deal. Taryn. You're not running a charity."

The sound of raised voices spills out of Gamma Abel's office as I approach. I slow my steps, my stomach sinking when I recognize Kallias's sharp tone.

When I step into the office, he's pacing like a caged animal, his hands gesturing wildly as he rants. Gamma Abel, on the other hand, looks like he's two seconds away from throwing himself out the window.

"Gamma," Kallias says, slamming his hands down on the desk. "This is a risk we can't afford to take."

The Gamma doesn't respond. He just rubs his temples, muttering something under his breath that sounds a lot like a prayer for patience.

I'll handle it," Gamma Abel finally says, his tone weary.

"No need," I chime in, stepping fully into the room. "I'm already here."

Kallias spins around, his blue eyes narrowing when they land on me. "You-"

"Hi, I interrupt, brushing past him to stand in front of Camma Abel's desk.

"Perfect timing," the Gamma mutters, rubbing his temples. "We were just talking about you."

"Always a pleasure," I say dryly, sliding into the room.

Kallias turns to me, all sharp edges and fury. "Get that rogue out. Now"

I ignore him, planting myself in front of the Gamma's desk. "Enoch's my boyfriend."

The room falls silent. For a second, I think I've pulled it off. Then Kallias laughs, sharp and mean. "Boyfriend: That's the best you've got?"

"Jealous?" I shoot back, tilting my head.

He steps closer, his jaw ticking. "You're delusional if you think anyone's buying that."

"Taryn," Gamma Abel is clearly stressed now. "Please tell me you have a logical explanation for all of this."

"I do, I say, smiling sweetly. "Ha, let's hear it," Kallias chuckles to himself.

I ignore him, turning my full attention to Gammabel. “He ran away from his p
