Chapter 9

Iris had stayed in all day. Just after five in the afternoon, Megan called.

“Hi, Megan.”

“Iris, I heard you’re pregnant. With twins! Is that true?”

Megan’s voice was tender and happy in a way Iris had seldom heard.

She used to have two sons. Julian Hale was the oldest, Heriberto the younger.

The family had always pinned their hopes on Julian, and he was meant to take over the Hale Group.

But five years ago, after a skiing accident, he never made it back.

With Julian gone, Heriberto was all they had. Megan had been against him marrying Iris at first, but once it happened, she started hoping for grandkids.

Recently, Megan and her husband, Charlie, had been abroad, visiting the place where Julian’s accident happened, marking the anniversary of his death.

Iris hadn’t wanted to bother them, so she kept the pregnancy to herself.

But now that Megan had asked, there was no reason to hide it. “Yes,” Iris said.

“Oh, thank God!” Megan squealed. “You’re finally pregnant. Charlie and I just got back. Come over for dinner tonight. I need to see my grandbabies!”

Iris almost said no. Things with Heriberto were still too tense.
