Summer POV

The night before, after everyone had left my room, and I was alone, I sat at the edge of the bed, thinking about the events of the day. I grabbed my head in my hands, wondering where I landed myself. Escape looked like a distant reality. Feeling mentally exhausted, I dragged my feet to the bathroom and took a long, hot bath.

On coming out, I saw that my bag was in my room, and all my clothes were out of it. So I walked to the closet to take out my only pajamas and shirt for the night. However, I was stunned when I saw that several new dresses were hanging inside with their price labels intact. I looked at the labels and was shocked to see that the cost of each of them was higher than what I earned in a year. Five pairs of matching footwear peeked from the last shelf.

People were so rich? Every dress was more beautiful than the last. I swallowed as I wondered if I could wear them. Or did they belong to the previous owner? But all of them seemed like they were my size. My eyes went to a small note on the side. I picked it up and read.

I let out a rough exhale. Probably he didn’t want to see me in shabby clothes in front of all the Lunas. I was representing Laura, and he must have thought that he had to help a poor maid. Anyway, this was a generous gift. I pulled out my pajamas and my long–sleeved cotton shirt from there, and wore it. The dresses were for formal occasions. I wouldn’t soil them otherwise. Though I did notice a few night dresses as well.

Once I was in bed, I read the entire schedule for Luna trials and memorized it. It was an exhausting schedule, but I prayed to God that I did well. Else Morelli would eat me alive. As soon as Laura was fine, I’d quit and escape.

In the morning, I took a nice bath, and chose to wear a baby blue dress. Then I combed my hair straight, and applied the only makeup I owned. A pink lip gloss. I wore white ballet shoes with it, and walked out to be in the lobby with other contestants, when I heard a loud, impatient knock on the door.

Every plane, every dip was chiseled to perfection. His hair was tousled and falling on his forehead. I had to drag my gaze with effort to look at him, and noticed that he was inhaling the air deeply with his nostrils flared. And the expression on his face was that of agony. He looked stunned, like he was bereft of words. Was I smelling bad? Embarrassed, I bit my bottom lip as my cheeks heated.

“Alpha Bradley?” I whispered.
