Wilfred did not immediately answer. His lips were pressed into a thin line. When he had first reunited with Nina, he thought she had lost her memory and forgotten their past. But now he realized something more troubling. Her memories were distorted. "We're in a cave," he finally said. "You have a fever, and I couldn't keep moving with you. Nina, look at me. I have something important to tell you."

Wilfred released Nina but kept a firm grip on her shoulders, his seriousness making her recognize the gravity of the situation.

"What do you need to tell me?" she asked, seeing the weight of his expression.
