Chapter 1525

Jamie bit her lip tightly, her face pale as paper from blood loss. A mocking smile played on her lips. "Don't worry, Ben. I know my place. How could someone like me possibly hurt someone like you?" Ben felt a heavy weight settle in his chest, as if a boulder had lodged itself there. It was neither something he could expel nor swallow.

His dark, piercing eyes glinted with cold, unrelenting anger. "Jamie, you never fail to impress me," he said, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm.

Mrs. Lucas, watching their verbal sparring with satisfaction, chimed in, her tone sharp. "This woman would throw you away for the smallest gain. Why waste your energy on her?"

"Enough," Ben snapped, his voice even and calm, though his gaze burned with quiet fury. It was as if the exchange hadn't phased him at all.

"No need to give her any more money. She's not worth it." His cold, piercing stare lingered on Jamie, making her breath hitch.

Mrs. Lucas couldn't contain her glee. "Good. Now that you've seen her true colors, it's time to move on. There are plenty of respectable women out there waiting for you."

"Let's discuss this elsewhere." Ben's tone was cold as he turned and strode out, leaving Jamie behind.

Jamie watched them disappear down the hallway, her body trembling as the last shred of her resolve crumbled. Slumping over the edge of the hospital bed, she clutched at her aching wounds. The pain from her injuries was relentless, each small movement feeling like needles pricking her skin.

But she couldn't rest. Not when Charlie was still in Winnie's hands. With great effort, Jamie dragged herself to her feet, determined to leave the hospital and call Winnie again.

All the blame lay with her, and she would bear it alone. None of this should touch Charlie.
