Regret Novel 36

Over the next two days, every one of Charlotte’s scheduled surgeries was inexplicably reassigned. Then, without warning, she was transferred out of her department and assigned to the ER.

Clutching the transfer notice, Charlotte marched straight to Director Fontaine’s

office and knocked on the door.

When she heard his reply, she entered and got right to the point. “Director Fontaine, what’s the meaning of this unauthorized position change? Last I checked, I don’t report directly to you.”

Director Fontaine paused in his work, barely glancing up at her, a smirk curling at the corner of his mouth. “The ER’s short–staffed, and you’ve had a light schedule lately. I moved you to help out–do you have a problem with that?”

“Light schedule?” Charlotte let out a sharp laugh. “All six of my surgeries for the past three days were reassigned for no reason. We’re already short on surgeons–if you keep shuffling people around like this, when are the rest of us supposed to get any rest?”

“That’s not your concern,” Director Fontaine replied, tapping his fingers impatiently on the desk. “The administration approved the change. If you have a problem, take it up with them. Don’t bother me with it.”

Charlotte opened her mouth to argue, but just then a nurse burst through the door. “Director, it’s bad–Dr. Sinclair collapsed in the OR. The patient’s in critical
