Hospital corridor.

Tricia deliberately sent Charlotte a photo of Evander spending time with the child, her tone unmistakably triumphant.

[Dr. Sterling, Evander’s with me and the little one right now. He’s not coming over, so don’t bother waiting for him.]

Charlotte didn’t reply.

Tricia didn’t care to check again. As far as she was concerned, her plan had worked. At the very least, she had managed to keep Evander occupied.

The door to the patient’s room opened, and Tricia turned to see Evander stepping out. She quickly slipped her phone away, putting on her brightest smile. “Evander, is Hans still asleep?”

He nodded, indifferent. “Stay with him for now. I have things to do.”

Tricia’s smile faltered.

As Evander turned to leave, she reached out and grabbed his arm. “Evander!”

She knew exactly where he was headed, and panic crept in.

In the six months since they’d returned to the country, she and Evander hadn’t returned to what they once were. She still hadn’t gotten what she wanted. How could she just give up and hand him over to someone else?

Evander glanced back at her, frowning. “What is it?”

“I’m just worried Hans will wake up and not see you…” Her voice trembled. “Why don’t you stay until he wakes up?”
