Regret Novel 110

Chapter 110

Charlotte looked over at the sound of laughter. A group of children, no older than five or six, were circling a beautiful woman clutching a porcelain doll, spraying her with water guns.

The woman seemed lost in her own world, only hugging the doll tighter to her chest. “Don’t hurt my little girl,” she pleaded softly.

Charlotte called out to the kids, “Hey! If you keep picking on her, I’ll call the police and have you all taken away!”

The children scattered instantly, voices fading as they ran.

Charlotte approached the woman and reached out to help her up. As she did, her gaze landed on the ring the woman wore–a deep red ruby, pigeon blood in color. Charlotte had seen such gems only once before, on her mother–in–law, Miranda. That stone was definitely real, and this one looked just as authentic.

It must be worth a fortune.

But why would a woman who clearly struggled with her mental health wear something so expensive? Wasn’t she afraid of being robbed?

“Ma’am, are you all right?” Charlotte asked gently.

The woman looked up, dazed, and suddenly grabbed Charlotte’s hand. “Sweetheart, is that you? You’ve come home? Please, don’t leave Mommy again, okay? Look—this is you.” She pointed lovingly at the doll in her arms, her smile tender as spring sunshine.

Charlotte softened her voice. “I’m sorry, ma’am, you must have mistaken me for someone else. I’m not your daughter. Do you remember how to get home? Or would you like me to take you to the police station first?”

“Home?” The woman hugged the doll tighter, shaking her head violently. “No, I won’t go home. There’s no daughter at home.”

Charlotte flashed a reassuring smile. “But your little girl is right here with you. You can take her home together.”

“Daughter…” the woman murmured, then suddenly fixed her eyes on Charlotte’s
