Regret Novel 124

After a moment, Charlotte snapped out of her daze. Her voice was hoarse. “I’m out of practice–it’s been too long since I last cooked.”

“That’s not it.”

His reply was quick, almost abrupt. “It’s not that you’ve forgotten how. You just don’t want to anymore.”

Charlotte stared at him, bewildered. In six years together, she’d never seen him like this–so hollow, so defeated.

At least, never in front of her.

She couldn’t tell what state the alcohol had left him in tonight, but he definitely wasn’t drunk to the point of losing his senses.

Evander met her gaze. “That’s your only condition?”

“I want your word–and I want you to keep it.”

When she took out her phone to record, he rested his elbow on the counter, a lazy, almost wistful smile flickering in his eyes. “Alright.”

Charlotte headed for the kitchen.

She’d made hangover soup so many times before that she didn’t even have to think about where the ingredients were kept.
