After a moment, Charlotte snapped out of her daze. Her voice was hoarse. “I’m out of practice–it’s been too long since I last cooked.”

“That’s not it.”

His reply was quick, almost abrupt. “It’s not that you’ve forgotten how. You just don’t want to anymore.”

Charlotte stared at him, bewildered. In six years together, she’d never seen him like this–so hollow, so defeated.

At least, never in front of her.

She couldn’t tell what state the alcohol had left him in tonight, but he definitely wasn’t drunk to the point of losing his senses.

If anything, he seemed more clear–headed than ever.

She clenched her hands and looked away. “Fine. I’ll make you some hangover soup. But you have to promise me you’ll stay out of Hiram’s business from now on.”

Evander met her gaze. “That’s your only condition?”

“I want your word–and I want you to keep it.”
