Regret Novel 127

Rachel stood frozen for what felt like ages, completely blindsided, unable to react. Just then, Julian appeared with several nurses in tow. “Ma’am!” he called out.

The nurses hurried over and gently pulled her aside.

Mrs. Rayburn struggled, shouting, “I want my daughter-!”

“She’s right here, she’s right here!” Julian rushed to hand her the doll he’d brought.

The moment Mrs. Rayburn saw it, she quieted instantly, clutching the doll to her chest as if someone might snatch it away. “It’s okay, it’s okay, Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here…”

Julian wiped sweat from his brow–his career had nearly gone up in smoke!

He noticed Rachel, still shaken, and quickly stepped up to explain, “I’m so sorry–my wife startled you. Are you alright?”

It was only then that Rachel snapped back to reality. She shook her head. “I’m… I’m fine…”

“Thank goodness,” Julian breathed out, then turned to the nurses. “Let’s get my wife back to her room.”

The staff coaxed Mrs. Rayburn away with practiced patience until she finally followed them down the hall.

Even after they disappeared around the corner by the elevators, Rachel’s heart was still pounding.

Just then, Xavier came out to find her, noticing she’d been gone fetching hot water for far too long. “You went to get hot water, didn’t you? Why are you just standing there?”
