Charlotte stepped out of the hospital’s surgical wing, squinting into the sunlight. There, by the revolving doors, she spotted Jonathan pacing back and forth, blending in with the flow of people coming and going.

She headed his way. “Jonathan?”

He turned, a faint smile flickering across his face. “Oh, it’s you.”

“What are you doing out here?”

He avoided her gaze. “Waiting for someone.”

In truth, he’d come looking for her. He just couldn’t come up with a good excuse, and he worried she’d taken Evander’s words to heart and wouldn’t want to see him

Charlotte caught on, then teased, “You know, the seats in the lobby are free. You could always wait inside.”

“I’m too restless to sit still.” His eyes drifted briefly to her midsection before he looked away. “How’s your mom doing?”

She nodded. “She’s doing well.”
