Regret Novel 188

“Well, I suppose I owe you some thanks, then.” Charlotte smiled. “If it hadn’t been for Director Winthrop pulling some strings, I wouldn’t be here at all.”

Tricia feigned ignorance. “What do you mean by that, Dr. Sterling?”

Charlotte stepped closer, stopping right in front of Tricia. She lowered her voice so only the two of them could hear. “I’m not pregnant. So there was never any miscarriage. Disappointed?”

Tricia froze, her smile fading, lips going stiff as the truth sank in.

Before Tricia could muster a response, Charlotte turned to Jonathan. “Jonathan, I’ll head back to my office now.”

He nodded, watching as Charlotte disappeared into the elevator.

Charlotte’s right arm was still healing, so she wasn’t cleared for surgery yet. The hospital director had rescheduled all her upcoming operations, assigning her only to pre–op consultations for now.

She’d already asked a colleague to check the security footage, but the cameras didn’t cover the hallway. With people going in and out on both floors, finding out who pushed her was going to be nearly impossible.

Mrs. Rivers was officially being discharged and had specifically requested to see Charlotte. Winston arranged the appointment for his wife.

Charlotte made a special trip to the room. She knocked, waited for permission, then stepped inside.

Winston was packing up his wife’s things in the corner.
