“Enough,” I couldn’t listen to this any longer, my voice cold as I interrupted Heidi. “Don’t mention her again.”
“Oh. Caden, if you don’t want to hear about her, I won’t bring it up,” Heidi replied, her tone apologetic.
She glanced down at the glass shards on the floor and, with a considerate expression, offered, “Caden, let me clean this up for you.”
“No need. The cleaning staff will handle it later,” I responded indifferently.
“Let me do it. If you accidentally step on it, it could hurt. I’d feel bad,” Heidi insisted.
As she spoke, she crouched down and began picking up the glass pieces.
Unable to stop her, I leaned back in my chair.
Thoughts of the online discussions earlier made me feel uneasy.
I took out my phone, instinctively opened my contacts, and scrolled until I found Rosaline’s number.
Staring at the name Rosaline, I hesitated for a while and tapped the screen with mixed emotions.
However, the call went straight to voicemail.
“Sh*t!” I muttered under my breath, slamming the phone down onto the desk.
Heidi was startled. She looked up at me and asked, “Caden, are you okay?”
I snapped back to reality and replied, “I’m fine.”
“All done,” Heidi said, standing up and tossing the glass shards into the trash.
Just then, her phone rang.
“Caden, sorry, I need to take this call,” Heidi said apologetically.
I nodded, indifferent.
Heidi answered the phone. “Boss, can I have the night off?”
“No!” the bar owner’s sharp voice came through the receiver.
My hearing was acute, and I raised an eyebrow.
Heidi bit her lip and said cautiously, “But I got hurt today. I have a bandage on my knee and can’t perform tonight.”
“Then I’ll deduct double from your pay!” the bar owner retorted coldly.
Heidi pleaded pitifully, “Boss, please make an exception. I’m injured, and I need the money. Please don’t deduct my pay, okay?”
“Heidi, do you think I’m a charity? If everyone took time off like you, would this bar even run?” The bar
