“What did you say?” Caden’s expression shifted at Queenie’s outburst as he turned toward the bed. Mr. Richard’s chest rose and fell erratically, a stark red stain spreading across the once–pristine sheets. “Grandpa, can you hear me?” Panic flickered in Caden’s eyes.

“Rosaline, what have you done?” Queenie jabbed a finger in my direction, her voice shrill with accusation. “Grandpa was perfectly fine until you interfered! Now he’s coughing up blood–are you trying to kill him?”

I glanced at Mr. Richard lying on the bed, feeling a bit strange, then stepped forward and said, “Let me take a look.”

“You have no right to touch Grandpa ever again! Queenie snapped, blocking my way. Her voice was sharp with accusation. “Rosaline, you must have hidden motives! You made Grandpa ill, and now you’re afraid he’ll blame you when he wakes up, so you want to get rid of him!”

I furrowed my brows. “What nonsense are you spouting? Mr. Richard was fine. Are you trying to jinx him?”

“Queenie isn’t making things up!” Mrs. Holbrook chimed in, storming over to point an accusing finger at me. “He was perfectly fine when we walked in, but after your so–called treatment, he started coughing up blood. If that wasn’t your doing, then whose was it?”

I was at a loss for words. Could those two harpies use a little logic for once?

“Enough!” Caden suddenly spoke, his cold gaze sweeping over Queenie and Mrs. Holbrook. “Can you stop. this and let Grandpa rest?”
