The slightest movement on the hospital bed, followed by a hoarse, weak voice, silenced the room.

“Dominick!” The woman closest to the bed reacted first, leaning in with excitement and joy. “Dominick, you’re awake.”

“Go get George and the doctor, now!”

Stephanie stood at the foot of the bed, dazed.

She looked at the man lying in the hospital bed. He had just woken up, looking pale and bleary–eyed. Yet, he managed to lift his head slightly, his gaze locking onto hers.

He didn’t speak again, but Stephanie felt a faint tremor in her chest. His gaze… It wasn’t as cold and hard as before. There was something different, something softer, weaker.

“You are…Stephanie?” the woman standing by the bed asked with a somewhat awkward expression.
