Chapter 436: Dejection II

Silence on the other end of the phone—one which persisted for more than a few seconds—informed Athena that her confession had rattled Aiden, had made him speechless.

She swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the phone. But she couldn’t have lied about it, couldn’t have assured the latter that she had things in control, that she would take care of things with more time, like Ewan would—well, Ewan did deliver when he spoke.

She could have if she understood the solution, but she didn’t. So even if she was given a week, she didn’t think she could deliver.

Her chest rose and fell in a slow, weary sigh. She had spent more than seven hours trying to understand, but to no avail. The gates of wisdom and knowledge of science had been shut against her.

"Athena, are you sure? Maybe you need more time... and you can take as much as you can... you are not the bringer of the virus. Don’t let the expectations pressure you..."

Athena sighed again, pressing her palm against her forehead. Her friend was yet to understand. "Aiden..."

"I know. I know. I heard what you said, Athena." His voice was soft, almost pleading. "But you don’t give up, not easily. Keep trying. You can take a break. Go sleep, or immerse yourself in sunlight, in watching nature... maybe an inspiration might come..."

Athena closed her eyes, her head tipping back slightly. As much as what Aiden listed worked at times, she didn’t think it could be applied here. But she said, "Okay." Because that’s what he wanted to hear.

"Good." A pause lingered, filled with the faint sound of his exhale. "You can do this, Athena, just hang in there, and poke around that big brain of yours."

Athena chuckled—softly, sadly, her lips quirking with a humor she didn’t feel. "You get it, big man. Now, tell me, why did you call?"

"Just to inform you that we have the situation under control, and you need not bother your pretty head about that."

"And what situation would that be?" she asked, raising a brow though he couldn’t see it.

"The prisoners that had escaped the Black Cells. Fortunately for us, they were tagged, hence easy to track. Ewan had sent us their coordinates when he had been sure they had stopped moving. We met some of his men on those locations even..."
