Tyler's tone was unusually serious this time-no, not just serious. There was a trace of anger simmering beneath his words.

Bert, picking up on it, dropped the subject. Out of the corner of his eye, he snuck glances at Tyler, thinking that if Tyler could only see his own expression when he spoke like this, maybe he'd realize he looked like a kicked puppy-utterly abandoned and pitiful.

Tyler had spent another two years in the hospital, and whatever fever he'd had for life seemed to have cooled for good.

The moment he stepped out of the hospital and slid into the car, he fished out a cigarette and lit up.

He hadn't smoked for days; the craving had been driving him half mad.

Bert, behind the wheel, tried to lighten the mood. "You haven't gone out with us in ages. How about hitting the town tonight for a drink or two?"

"Not interested."

Tyler leaned against the window, cigarette between his fingers, watching the city blur past. Suddenly, he was struck by how pointless everything felt.

How did he get by before Athena came into his life? He couldn't remember anymore.

The aftermath of falling in love was a real punch to the gut. He was starting to regret his choices all over again.

He took a long drag, finishing the cigarette in a few deep pulls.

"I'm getting this mole removed," he announced.

Bert looked genuinely surprised, then burst out laughing.

"Since when did you start caring about stuff like that? Honestly, I think it suits you. I've overheard plenty of women talking-they love that little mark on your face."
