Chapter 311

Audrey’s POV

Twilight settled over Long Island as Dr. Clarke’s birthday gala went into full swing. I smoothed down the emerald-accented dress Eleanor had selected for me, making sure Emma’s matching ribbon was straight.

With Emma’s small hand in mine and my other arm linked through Adrian’s, we made our entrance. Despite Dr. Clarke not being among the wealthiest in attendance, his forty years treating seemingly impossible medical cases worldwide had earned him a celebration packed with influential guests.

At the entrance, a man in a white suit greeted each arrival. I recognized him immediately.

“Welcome!” he said to the couple ahead of us. “My grandfather can’t stand here long, so I’m filling in.”

After the couple moved on, Adrian handed over our invitation.

“The Knox family,” the man said, glancing down before looking up with a practiced smile. “Mr. Knox, Mrs. Knox, I’m Dr. Clarke’s grandson. My grandfather’s resting, so I’m here to welcome you.”

When his eyes met mine, the recognition was instant. His pupils contracted and his mouth fell open mid-sentence. “You… Audrey!”

Without hesitation, he abandoned his post, practically vaulting over the table between us. “Audrey! Is it really you?”

He reached for my arm then stopped himself, his hands fidgeting at his sides instead. “I knew you had to be alive!”

Watching my old friend’s unfiltered joy caused unexpected emotions to surface. Felix was Dr. Clarke’s grandson, and clearly, he knew my real identity.

“I… Before I could respond, I felt someone watching me. Turning slightly, I locked eyes with Blake standing twenty feet away, his expression calculating.

I pulled away from Felix. “I’m sorry, but you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

“Audrey, why are you still
