Chapter 437

Audrey’s POV

William smiled weakly beneath his oxygen mask. He nodded, grateful I understood his worries. His fingers squeezed mine, conveying both relief and a silent plea not to grieve.

Tears slid down my cheeks. I wanted to tell him I wished he could stay, that I didn’t want him to leave so soon. But death comes for us all. I’d stared it in the face myself, felt illness crushing me day by day.

I couldn’t even save myself back then. How could I possibly save an eighty-year-old man?

“William,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”

He didn’t answer. He just looked at me, eyes filled with reluctance to go. After a long silence, his face softened into a smile as he shook his head. Gradually, his eyes closed. His hand slipped from mine, hanging limply.

The medical equipment shrieked. Charles burst through the door, followed by doctors and nurses. I was pushed aside as they surrounded William, performing CPR and readying the defibrillator.

“Clear! A doctor pressed the paddles to William’s chest.

His body jolted, but the monitor continued its unbroken tone.

I stood in the corner, watching. Strangely, I felt calm. Not a single tear fell. I’d always thought I’d fall apart when William passed, but I felt oddly detached.

My fingers clutched the notepad with his final words. I watched with an unusual distance, as if we shared no connection at all.

Finally, the doctor stepped back, sweat on his forehead. “Time of death: 3:42 PM.”

Charles collapsed to his knees, clutching William’s arm as he sobbed. Through the door, I heard Elizabeth and Rebecca arguing in the hallway.

“You okay?” The doctor approached me with concern.

I sniffed quietly, tucking the notepad away. “I’m fine.”

He squeezed my shoulder. “You should head out.”

I followed him into the hallway, where Rebecca and Elizabeth were bickering, each blaming the other for not being at William’s bedside.

‘Doctor!” Elizabeth rushed over. “Is he really gone? What happened?”
