"The doctor will bring news when he's done. It will be at least a few hours," she replies, her expression sympathetic but her words stab at my heart. "Someone will update you as soon as possible." I feel like I might collapse right there, but Gordon's steady hand on my arm keeps me upright.

"She's been through a big ordeal. Is there someone who can check her over?" Gordon asks the nurse.

"Of course. Go through and take a seat. Someone will be with you shortly."

We get led into a small cubicle with a bed and a chair in the emergency department.
