Opening the ornate wooden box, Chloe found an emerald bracelet nestled inside. The emerald was of exceptional quality, its vibrant green hue glowing against the light. Yet, it was encased in a gold setting a curious choice, as anyone in the know would tell you that top- notch emeralds should never be set in gold. It diminishes their integrity and slashes their value, unless, of course, the bracelet was already broken.

In Riverbrook's high society, there was an unwritten rule: wearing a broken bracelet at a wedding was considered a major faux pas. Chloe had chosen this gift deliberately, a subtle jab meant to ruffle Linda's feathers.
