Linda lay down, her eyes locked onto Chloe's with the innocence of a lost puppy. Normally, Chloe would have thought Linda was just putting on an act. But now, seeing her like this, Chloe's heart ached. "Linda, what do you really want to say?"

"My child, how is my child doing?"

Linda's lips were still stained with blood, making them look strikingly vivid. Chloe replied, "He's doing well. He's eating and sleeping fine, just a bit smaller than a full-term baby should be."

Linda seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. "Chloe," she said, "I was wrong. I truly was. If I had another chance, I would never treat you this way. Could you ever forgive me?"

"Let's talk about this later, okay?"

Linda shook her head. "I'm dying, Chloe. I can't be with you, and I can't stand to see you happy with someone else. In a way, it's a relief. I won't bother you anymore."
