Effie realized Lyman would be arriving any minute, so she turned to Yolande and spoke. "When you threatened me with that knife earlier, where were you planning to take me? And once we got there, were you going to figure out how to torture me?"

Yolande's eyes widened in disbelief. She stared at Effie, thrown off balance.

Just moments ago, Yolande had thought Effie would be easy to control, someone she could manipulate without effort. She hadn't expected this woman to be so perceptive, to see through her every move.
