By ten PM. Quinlyn was rubbing her eyes and stifling yawns. Stanley and the other two boys exchanged glances, knowing it was time to get her home.

The driver worked for Glenn but was also a Hill family’s trainee.

Normally laid–back, Larry took extra care with Quinlyn. He ran through a long list of instructions with the driver before letting Quinlyn leave.

“See you this weekend, guys.” Quinlyn waved, not wanting to keep them from their studies.

As the car pulled away toward the suburbs, she munched on the candy they bought her, even offering some to the trainee up front.

His eyes lit up at the sight of the iron box. “I remember the day when I gave Stanley the candy. He really lost it back then,” he said with a laugh.

“He sat on the sidewalk and ate it all. Then he demanded to see you. I didn’t know how to calm him down. Well, you two really have something special. And I’ve never seen Larry act like that with his other cousins,” he added.

Quinlyn had no idea that had happened. She blinked at the candy box, momentarily stunned. Then, slowly, she smiled. Those boys always had her back. Family wasn’t about blood–and that was enough. With or without parents, she was happy.

Quinlyn always found joy in the little things. She had sweet dreams that night. The next morning, the first thing on her mind was getting a souvenir for Mandy. She also planned to get something for Claude, Elowyn, Curtis, and Quinton.

As she headed downstairs, counting on her fingers, she heard a young voice from the living room before she even turned the corner.

It was Glenn’s nephew, Zebulon Bronson. “Is my uncle out again? Who holds meetings this early? And what about that kid? I heard my uncle is taking her in. I should at least get a look at her,” he said.

Quinlyn walked down to see him surrounded by several staff. He lounged in an armchair, legs crossed, looking completely at home. “Not hungry, so don’t bother. I’m not leaving till I see her,” he declared.

He was dressed sharply in designer clothes. A flashy mechanical watch gleamed on his wrist, its diamonds catching the light. His hair was perfectly styled, and he looked like he’d been born to rule this house.

“She hasn’t joined the family yet, and you’re all acting like she’s already a member. What’s the deal? Did she put some kind of spell on you? Now I really want to know who she is,” he sneered.
