Linda, who had just been helped up from the floor, looked even more surprised. “You two got married?” Estelle smiled and nodded. “Yes, let me formally introduce you to my husband, Jonathan!” Linda glanced at Lambert with a mix of awkwardness and joy, managing a sheepish smile. “Oh, I see!” Lambert, his eyes lowered, said quietly, “Now that everyone’s here, let’s start the feast!” He didn’t want Estelle to remain standing for too long. Guests took their seats as the servers brought out wine and an assortment of dishes. Linda had thrown this party to flaunt her status and to outshine Estelle, but when she saw the commanding presence of Jonathan, Estelle’s husband, her desire to boast quickly faded. Sylvia took delight in Linda’s discomfiture, and seeing Lambert with a stern face, she was quite pleased. She chatted softly with Estelle before pulling Amiee and Evelyn into the conversation, turning the event into what seemed like an ordinary get-together among friends. Linda, however, was fuming inwardly and couldn’t shake off her foul mood. Jonathan paid no mind to the others, attending to Estelle with care. Once she had eaten enough, he escorted her out early.
