After dinner, the housekeeper prepared a guest room for Evelyn to stay in. Sophia came from her own room with a set of pajamas for Evelyn. “These are brand new, never been worn. Try them on; they should fit since we’re about the same height.” “No need, I saw a bathrobe in the wardrobe!” Evelyn said with a smile. “Bathrobes aren’t comfy. Just wear these, no need to be shy!” Sophia said quickly, her words tumbling over each other. “It’s not about being shy! This is going to be my home now, why would I be shy?” Evelyn chuckled. “I just don’t like wearing someone else’s clothes.” Sophia’s smile faltered for a moment. “Oh, okay then. Wear the bathrobe for tonight, and I’ll take you shopping for something new tomorrow.” “That sounds great, thanks!” Evelyn’s eyes twinkled with mischief as she asked, “Sophia, do you always stay here?” “Not really, just occasionally to keep Old Mr. Quintin company.” “Well, now that I’m here, I can keep him company. You don’t have to make the trip back and forth. I heard you have a boyfriend; you should spend more time with him.” Evelyn’s polite smile didn’t waver. Sophia paused, then quickly said, “I’ll be heading back tomorrow!” “Bring your boyfriend over sometime!” Evelyn suggested with a gleam in her eye. “Sure!” With a brief farewell, Sophia pointed towards the door. “I’ll head out first.” She turned and left the room, feeling an odd sensation in her chest. Jason followed. “Got kicked out, did you?” “No!” Sophia denied reflexively. “Evelyn didn’t say anything; stop making things up!” “Dummy!” Jason gave her a sidelong glance and strode off, quickly leaving Sophia behind with his long legs. Sophia watched his retreating figure and playfully threw a punch in the air. “You’re the dummy!” Jason stopped and looked back. Sophia quickly retracted her hand, her eyes darting around before she caught up with a sunny smile. “Jason, are you mad?” Jason squinted, gazing at her intently. “Do you even know why I’m mad?” Sophia’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Today, Old Mr. Quintin said he wanted to see Evelyn married off to Gabriel, to

you fancy Evelyn, I could help you out, you know!” Jason stopped abruptly, his face taut as he turned around. “Do you ever take anything seriously?” “Why are you so fierce?” Sophia frowned. Jason took a deep breath, softening his tone a bit. “Evelyn’s new here. Don’t joke about her like that. It would be awkward if she heard you.” “I got it!” Sophia pouted, obediently backing down. Jason gave her a look and then headed downstairs. Jonathan and Estelle were saying their goodbyes at the bottom of the stairs. Jason approached, “I’ll leave with you guys.” Old Mr. Quintin asked, “Not staying the night?” Jason turned, his gaze meeting Sophia’s. The irritation in him flared up, and he replied coolly, “I have a meeting early in the morning, so I won’t be staying.” Sophia looked down, her mood dampened, not sure if it was because of Evelyn’s words or Jason’s
