Old Mr. Quintin watched them depart and took a seat in the spot Estelle had just vacated. With a chuckle, he said, “Looks like it’s me who’ll keep you company, my boy. Young folks just don’t have the patience, so you better recognize that I’m the one who’s in for the long haul. Realize that sooner, and save me the headache!”

Old Mr. Jarvis, busy setting up the chessboard, replied calmly, “We’re not even sure that Evelyn is Vivian’s daughter. Aren’t you getting a bit ahead of yourself?”

Old Mr. Quintin’s expression grew serious. “It’s been over twenty years. If Evelyn isn’t, do you really think I can ever find Nana again?”

“Hmph,” Mr. Jarvis grunted. “So, what? You’re planning to just go along with a mistake?”

Old Mr. Quintin frowned. “What mistake? At this point, there’s at least a fifty-fifty shot that Evelyn is my granddaughter. No, I’d say it’s more like eighty percent.”

Sighing, Old Mr. Jarvis said, “I just don’t want you to end up disappointed.”

Old Mr. Quintin waved his hand dismissively. “After all these years, I’ve had my fair share of disappointment. Evelyn’s a poor kid too, just like you said. If it turns out we’re wrong, well, then we’re wrong, and that’s not so bad.”

“As long as you can come to terms with it!”

“You should give my suggestion some thought. Our families uniting through marriage—I trust your boy, Gabriel, and Evelyn seems like a fine girl. If Gabriel settles down with a wife, maybe he’ll finally put down roots,” Old Mr. Quintin said with a smile.
