Feeling a sudden wave of exhaustion, she said, “I have got to go, the subway’s about to reach my stop.” Emily’s voice was flat, devoid of emotion. Gina could hear the indifference in Emily’s tone. Once off the phone, Emily’s expression softened. She didn’t blame anyone, really. It was just that her heart was getting colder by the minute.
