This is a disaster. Completely screwed.

Jane's stepmother dropped to the floor like her legs had given out, her face drained of hope. Jane didn't even blink-she had the staff tie up her stepmother and Carson and toss them both into the storage room. If Mrs. Kidd cared so much about Carson, she could deal with him herself.

Whatever bond Jane had with Mrs. Kidd was long gone. Just thinking about all those years spent trying to win her approval made Jane's stomach turn.

All that effort for nothing. She'd been so blind.

"Jane, you can't do this to me! Carson might not be your real brother, but I'm still your father's wife!" her stepmother shrieked.

Jane rolled her eyes. That voice was like nails on a chalkboard.

"Stuff something in their mouths. I'm done listening to this," Jane snapped, her patience gone.

The staff wasn't exactly gentle, and Carson's hand started bleeding again, the wound reopening.

Mrs. Kidd got so worked up she fainted and had to be carried off to her room. But Fiona didn't leave just yet.

She shot Jane a look. "So, what now?"

Jane paused, then finally said, "Maybe I shouldn't just walk away. I'm the only one left in the Kidd family who can take over. Carson's useless, Grandma's old. If I want real power, I have to take it. I want to be in charge of the Kidd family."

Fiona smiled, nodding. "That's what I was hoping to hear."
