Allison chuckled. "Why would I fire you? You don't even work for me."

Mindy looked over at Joshua.

Joshua said, "Allie, she tried to stop you at the door. If you want her gone, I'll make it happen."

Mindy: "Huh?"

So no matter what, I'm doomed to get fired, huh?

Allison shot Joshua a sidelong glance. "When did I ever say I wanted her fired? I didn't even make an appointment. She was just doing her job, stopping me. Employees who actually care about their work are rare-don't just fire people for doing the right thing."

James, standing nearby, smiled softly. "Understood."

Mindy finally let out the breath she'd been holding, her heart dropping out of her throat and back into her chest.

Joshua sat next to Allison, constantly searching for something to talk about.

"There's a new sushi place on the west side. Want to try it with me sometime?"

"I'll pass. I've been super busy lately."

"You still have to eat, no matter how busy you are."

"The west side's too far. I'd just be wasting time going back and forth."
