Allison stared him down, not backing away for a second. "Yeah.”

Shawn's expression tightened. "You can't take this case. Hand it over to someone else. Right now."

Allison let out a dry laugh. "And who says I have to?"

Shawn's eyes flashed, his jaw clenched. "My family's already bankrupt. Now you want my parents to split, too? Is tearing my family apart the only thing that'll make you happy?"

Allison's voice went cold. "You've got it all wrong. I'm not the one who wants your parents to get divorced-your mom does. Your dad doesn't. I'm on this case to make sure they stay together."

Shawn blinked, thrown off. "Wait, what?"

"I thought I was being pretty clear."

He eyed her, suspicious. "Are you lying to me? My mom says you're the one who convinced them to get divorced."

Allison crossed her arms, looking at him like he was a joke.

She gave a low, mocking laugh. "Your mom says this, your mom says that— Shawn, how old are you? Still doing everything your mom tells you? Are you her little lapdog or something?"

Shawn's face twisted. "Can we just stick to the point? No need for personal attacks."

Allison huffed, then brushed past him into the apartment lobby. "I don't have time to argue with you."

"Allison, are you seriously trying to keep them together?" Shawn called after her.
