Evander’s tone was exceedingly surly. Striding over to the bedside table, he picked up the jug and poured a glass of warm water before holding it out to Angeline.

“Here, hold this and take your medicine.”

She cradled her head, terror draining all the color from her face.

On instinct, Evander reached out and pulled her into his embrace. Frowning, he gently stroked her temples with his long and slender fingers.

“Don’t be afraid. It was just the thunder.”

As Angeline listened to his deep and calm voice, her agitation gradually abated.

“Sorry for troubling you.”

“Don’t mention it,” Evander replied tersely.

Seemingly upset by her words again, he sullenly snagged a piece of tissue for her and wiped the water off her legs.

At that, a wealth of warmth suffused Angeline.

Subsequently, Evander poured her another glass of water.

Quickly taking it from him, Angeline flashed him a sheepish smile and coaxed, “Don’t be mad. I was merely joking earlier. Let’s talk things out nicely.”

She had no doubt that if it weren’t for their past affections, he might have thrown the entire glass of water at her face.

Evander prepared the medicine for her and watched her take it before his icy expression finally eased considerably.

“Take a good rest. There are still things you need to handle on your grandfather’s side. If you want to reclaim the Sorelle family, you can’t fall now.”

At his remark, Angeline’s expression gradually turned somber. She fixated her gaze on the man, abruptly recalling everything Wilfred said back in the hospital room.

Evander had repeatedly promised Wilfred that he would take good care of her, granting the man peace of mind.

Because of that alone, Angeline was grateful to him.

“Sleep. I’ll leave you to it.”

It was as though Evander didn’t notice her eyes on him. His gaze remained unchanged, and he sounded as distant as ever.

Angeline stared at him, only recovering her voice after a long time passed.

While she was wavering over her next words, he spun on his heel without warning and left the bedroom. In the next heartbeat, a bang rang out, and the door was slammed shut.

In that split second, her heart seemingly sank to rock bottom. A sense of indescribable disappointment swamped her.
