Chapter 1030

For the next three days, Evadne didn't go back to her cottage in Elmsworth. Not only was Alva waiting there for her, but the place overflowed with memories of her and Thaddeus—every corner a reminder of when she'd loved him.

Even setting foot there felt like being sliced open.

She couldn't bring herself to go home to Silverlake Harbor, either-didn't want Emeric to worry, or to face her family's questions. So, she checked into a room at a downtown KS Group hotel, and holed up there for three nights, barely sleeping or eating.

Now that she'd lost Thaddeus's love, she felt like driftwood-unmoored, with nowhere to belong.

On the fourth day, her eldest brother, Elvis, and Jason finally tracked her down.

When they arrived, Evadne was a cocoon under the covers, the curtains drawn so tight that the room was pitch-black, even though it was midday. She was dead to the world and didn't hear the knocking.

The three men panicked. They called for the manager, who opened the door with a master key.

The suite was a disaster. Not a single sliver of daylight crept in. Clothes were tossed over the couch, shoes scattered like casualties on the floor-one by the window, one by the door.

But what really broke them was the mountain of takeout containers on the coffee table-half-eaten pizza crusts, empty Ben & Jerry's pints, and a graveyard of beer

bottles.
