Chapter 4

I stood inside the bedroom door, my heart suddenly racing for no reason. Could Brennan possibly know that I was planning to sneak away?

Taking a deep breath, I eventually walked up to him and timidly said with my head down, “Uncle, did you call for me?”

Brennan’s face was flushed, indicating that he had a high fever.

He frowned at me and took a moment before speaking, “Why have you been so well–behaved these past few days? Did Brittany say something to you privately? She is innocent–minded and straightforward. Whatever she says, she must have your best interests at heart. She doesn’t have any ill intentions towards you.”

I nodded gently and replied lightly, “Uncle, I understood everything.”

Brennan was stunned for a few seconds and snorted coldly, “Rare to see you return to your sensible self, and it’s even harder to hear you respectfully call me Uncle again!”

“Marlene, you have grown up now, and I can’t spoil you like I did when you were a child anymore! The tone I used when scolding you last time was too harsh, and it’s understandable that you feel

resentful!”

“But if you can be as well–behaved in the future as you have been these past few days, I promise I won’t shout at you anymore! So, please don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”

I nodded obediently again.

He stared at my eyes without saying a word, as if he wanted to see through me.

I felt a little guilty and avoided his gaze.
