Chapter 141
[ALEX]
Few months later:
“You don’t have to check her pulse every few minutes.” Dominic comments.
“Still don’t pay you for your two cents,” I grunt back, not taking my hand off my wife’s wrist.
I could feel her heart beating even though her eyes were closed.
One. Two. Three. Four. Stable. Steady.
“You’re too much.” My second–in–command looks like he wants to roll his eyes, but doesn’t. He knew better, which meant he didn’t want to end up in the same hospital he had to go through months of physical therapy to leave.
“Why’re you still here again?”
Dominic frowns. “I’ll be outside. Call if you need anything.” I nod. “Oh, and boss?” He adds, “Nice new house.”
It wasn’t a house, it was a home.
My and my wife’s home.
She stirs, her skin still warm under my touch. “Alex?” She calls softly, blinking.
“Right here, baby,” I mutter.
She blinks, a small smile spreading on her lips. “I feel better. You can let go of my hand.”
“Never,” I smile back at her, bringing her knuckles to my lips to place a soft kiss there. “And better how? You’re still burning up.”
“I feel stronger,” she grumps and gets up on the bed despite my protest. “Have you gotten any sleep?”
“If I go to sleep, who checks that you’re breathing.”
“I’m breathing,” she softly replies, gripping my hand tighter. “I’m not going to die on you.”
“You don’t know that,” I scoff, huffing some air out of my mouth as I snuggle close to her. She puts her hands around with a smile on her lips as I place my ears on her heart, listening to it beat.
That’s when I can close my eyes for a moment.
me
It all started last week, when we came back to the city from a few blissful months in Philadelphia for my parents anniversary party. The day after that, Mia developed a fever.
Even though I insisted we show a doctor, she chalked it off as overexertion and I let her rest.
Except when I tried waking her up the next morning, she wouldn’t wake up. She was burning in my arms and her breathing was shallow. I couldn’t find a pulse on her.
I stopped breathing in that moment.
The six minutes from our home to the emergency room in the hospital were the hardest six minutes of my life, and I was immediately transported to the time when she was in the ICU and I helplessly stood outside.

Turns out, she was severe delicated and had an infection. The doctors wanted to be sure it wasn’t a delayed complication from the stitches or the surgery she had after she was kidnapper
After she was cleared from those possibilities, and IV drip with saline and then antibiotics and two extra days of staying in the hospital just because I could force them to keep her there late, we got discharged last evening
Last night was our first night back here, and I couldn’t sleep. I had to make sure my wife was breathing, and her heart was beating
