As I rounded a corner, I saw Nathan in an iron–gray suit, smiling as he chatted with someone. He looked more mature and composed than ever, exuding the quiet confidence of someone at the very top. Today, he wore gold–rimmed glasses, and his eyes shone behind the lenses.

I came in from a side hallway. Nathan was talking and didn’t notice me at all–until his partner nudged him, and only then did he turn and see me.

I walked over with a confident smile, greeting him naturally.

Nathan’s eyes lingered on me for a split second, but he quickly put on a relaxed smile, as if nothing had happened. “Why didn’t you come with Mr. Holcomb?”

“He got here first. I had something to take care of, so I’m running a bit late,” I answered without missing a beat.

“Alright, let me take you inside,” Nathan offered, though it was clear he had more on his mind, but kept it to himself.

“That’s alright. There are still guests who haven’t arrived yet–I’ll just head in myself,” I said.

“Alright, I’ve got your seat all set up. My assistant will take you there,” Nathan said, and didn’t insist.
