Chapter175.

I clapped my hand over Sherry’s mouth like a hitwoman silencing a witness, dragging her into the elevator. My glare screamed: One wrong word and I’ll strangle you!

I was already in enough trouble! I didn’t need anyone to make things more complicated!

Sherry’s muffled giggles vibrated against my palm. Her eyes crinkled with mischief–clearly imagining some nonexistent romantic drama.

“Mmm…”

She nodded and made an OK sign, promising not to talk about it again. I released her.

The other three came in. As the elevator descended, Evan’s expression was colder than before. There was an undeniable air of unapproachability. The pressure from him made the elevator ride unusually quiet.

Leaving the building, Sherry, feeling grateful, offered to treat us to a late–night snack. Evan refused and left with Cody.

“He’s pissed,” Sherry whispered.

I sighed. I can see that; no need to tell me! He hasn’t been normal since returning from the resort. Let him be!

I changed the subject.“Aren’t we going to have a late–night snack? He’s not coming; Gloria and I will go. What do you think?”

“Terrific.”

Sherry drove us to a hot pot restaurant. We chatted while eating. Gloria had little prior interaction with Sherry, but meeting her today, she found Sherry to be a candid, free–spirited, yet intelligent and wise beauty. Though Gloria herself was artificial, she liked those who were not.

“Ms. Burke, did you find evidence to accuse Rita?”

“Mrs. Crowe is a cunning old fox,” Sherry said coldly with regret.“I thought after the previous two setups and tonight’s final blow, she’d finally confess. But she kept dodging the key issues… Sigh.”

Sherry angrily gulped two mouthfuls of beer.

“It’s normal,” Gloria said unsurprised, delicately eating a small bite of vegetables rinsed twice in clear water, her fingers elegantly raised.“The reason villains become villains is they habitually justify their evils with high–sounding excuses. Those TV redemption scenes are nonsense–they never feel guilty. The only ones they think should disappear are those who expose them.”

You see human nature clearly.”
