I found Josh in the backyard, his phone lying in the grass where he'd chucked it. He was pacing, his hands running through his hair, frustration etched into every line of his face.

"What's up with you?" I asked, leaning against the porch re watching him as he threw another glance at his phone like it might have magically fixed itself.

"Laura's not answering her phone," he grumbled, kicking at the dirt like it personally offended him. The guy was wound tighter than a drum. For a second there, I wondered if maybe he had found out about me and Jessica, but relief skimmed over me- he didn't. Otherwise, I would have been the one on the grass.

I walked over, dropped down onto the grass beside him, and stared up at the sky, trying to keep my own irritation in check. "You serious about her?" I asked, my voice coming out rougher than I intended.

Josh snorted, falling back onto the grass beside me. "What does it matter, man? She's probably out there having fun, forgetting about me."

I turned my head to look at him, my expression deadpan. "Because if you are serious, you need to cut the crap with Melanie. And you fucking know it." My tone left no room for argument. 17:50
