My chest tightened like a vice. "What do you mean? What happened? Talk Sam! Use your fucking words!" My voice was sharper than I meant it to be, but panic was already creeping in.

Sam took a shaky breath, trying to steady herself. "I got to the house, and the front door was wide open. I thought maybe they heard me coming and just left it like that, so I walked in." She hesitated, tears welling up in her eyes.
