Laughter rang through the house, the kind that settled deep in your chest and stayed there. The kind of laughter I never thought I’d get to hear again.

I stood in the doorway, watching as Luke and Jess maneuvered boxes from the U–Haul, bickering about who was carrying the heavier load. Josh was helping too, but knowing him, he’d take any excuse to slack off and tease them instead.

“A little help here, Saunders?” Luke grunted, shifting a particularly large box against his chest.

Josh smirked, wiping his hands on his jeans. “I am helping. I’m supervising.”

Jess rolled her eyes. “Unbelievable. I swear, Laura, you married the laziest man alive.”

“Oh, trust me, I know. Just remember he was your best friend first. Or maybe that was just because you were hung up
