Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 10
“…hi,” I squeaked out.
I was very aware that I was not looking my best. Every morning, I’d always put on makeup just in case I saw Valentino – but after no sign of him for six days, I eventually gave up.
I was getting up at 4:15 in the morning to put on my face, I was frickin’ exhausted, and if I wasn’t going to see him, what was the point?
So of course he shows up the first morning I wasn’t wearing any makeup.
Plus, I’d overslept because I was so tired, and I’d had to throw on my clothes in a hurry. I looked pretty sloppy with my hair all mussed up.
I’d figured that if any of the kitchen staff said anything when they came in to fix breakfast, I’d just go back to my room and tidy up.
So of course this was the time he decided to show up.
He didn’t seem put off by my looks, though, because he walked over right in front of me with that million-dollar smile.
He got so close I could smell his cologne and a hint of cigarette smoke on his clothes.
I tried to smell any alcohol on his breath –
Nope. He definitely wasn’t drunk.
He didn’t even seem buzzed. More like he was 100% sober.
“It’s good to see you,” he grinned. “I thought you weren’t starting work until tomorrow.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “I was supposed to, but – wait, you knew when I was starting work?!”
“Of course. I specifically asked about it.” Valentino chuckled. “Niccolo told me to leave you alone… but I told him that should be up to you.”
“…oh,” I squeaked again, suddenly feeling a hot flush all over me.
“When did you start?” he asked.
“Like – six days ago.”
“Six days ago?!” he exclaimed. “Shit – if I’d known that, I would’ve been back here way earlier!”
“Where… where were you?”
“Eh, just hanging out in Florence. I thought Nic said that’s where you’re from.”
“I am, yeah. I mean, I lived there. I’m not from there. But I lived there. For a couple of years. With roommates.”
Good Lord, I sounded like an idiot, even to myself.
“I looked for you in the clubs,” Valentino said, staring into my eyes, still giving me that movie star grin.
“…you did?” I asked, my heart pounding.
“Yeah. I mean, Florence is a big city, so I knew it was kind of stupid to think I’d run into you… but I kept an eye out for you.”
I figured he was lying – or just sweet-talking me –
