Turn Back Time

**ROMANY**

When the countdown ended and I heard Alex scream, I was afraid he was going to get in the way of the blast and possibly get hurt. So, I leapt out from under the desk and raced for the door, ready to throw it open and put a stop to the madness. My hand was on the bolt and my eyes were closed. I was just about to turn the lock when I heard him speaking again. The superiority in his voice, the conviction of it, had me smiling like a fool.

That's why he told me not to open it, *no matter what*. He knew something they didn't. He knew how to get around the law. That fact alone made him infinitely more sexy in my eyes. I mean, I don't know why I was surprised. He's a flippin' criminal. If anyone were to know the dos and don'ts of a warrant, I assume it would be someone like him.

I stepped away from the door and took a seat on the couch once again. When nothing else happened and the hall grew increasingly quiet, I began to get a bit nervous.

*He said he would send a maid for me.*

For whatever reason, I didn't want Damien or Mickey to see me leaving the office. I mean - I didn't doubt that they knew I was in here. That much probably became obvious when I didn't turn up to do my duty. I gasped, suddenly realizing that the mess had to have been up there when the cops were running around. *Did they see it?* No... no... they couldn't have, right? Because if they had, I doubted Alex would have been in the position to argue about the warrant at all. Maybe someone else cleaned it for me. Or perhaps the police just never made it past the first floor. I mean there are a *ton* of rooms in this place. Depending on what they were looking for, they might not have considered the rooms of any importance.

What *were* they looking for? The Priest, maybe?

Who knew? Not me, for sure and I needed to stop thinking about it because one thing Alex *never* does is apprise me of anything beyond my duties.

After an hour of speculating the what ifs and maybes of all that occurred on the other side of the door, I finally heard a key slip into the lock and the dead bolt turn. Simone's happy face greeted me the minute the door swung open and I smiled back at her in relief.

She put a finger to her lips and frantically waved me toward her, checking the hall on both sides of her as I exited the door.
