Chapter 3570

Every ship stayed still as if everyone had silently agreed not to move a muscle; crossing Bloodfin Bay was not an endeavor to undertake alone-unless one sought death.

Matthew scanned the scene, wondering, Fifteen boats already? Including ours, that should be more than enough to get moving. So, what's the holdup?

Ryan leaned against the railing and spoke just loud enough for Matthew to hear, "We're still five short. Once we hit twenty, that's our signal to move. Chances are better when the numbers are up."

Now, it made sense to Matthew. Alright, that adds up. Twenty ships give us maybe a thirty percent shot at getting through. Not great odds, but I guess that's the line people are willing to gamble their lives on.

His thoughts wandered. If Bloodfin Bay's already this bad... what the hell's waiting out in the deep sea?

"Tell me something, what's the deep sea like at night?" Matthew asked, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

Ryan's expression shifted. There was a look in his eyes—like he'd been there and barely made it back.

"Most of the really big creatures only surface after dark. That's when things get bad. During the day, it's a little safer. Most of those monsters stay deep, away from the sunlight. There's one exception, though-giant octopus."
