"Rebecca asked you to grab some drinks for the guests. If you didn't want to help her out, you could've just said no or had the staff do it instead of jumping in yourself. "You're so good at bossing me around but can't seem to manage the servants the same way?"

Selena caught the drift: he was hinting she was stirring up trouble on purpose, so there was no need to dig deeper. Everett shot her a cold glare. "Besides, as her cousin-in-law, what's the harm in giving her a little break?" Giving Rebecca a little break, really? Hadn't Selena been accommodating enough?

For three years, she had stepped aside for not just Rebecca but anyone in the Bennett family, missing out on the good stuff and taking the fall when things went south.

She still remembered that first New Year's Eve with the family when Rebecca lured her to the pond and pushed her in when she wasn't looking. In the freezing winter, the pond water was icy. It took Selena a while to scramble out, and despite being soaked and freezing, she wasn't one to back down, so she stormed up to Rebecca to confront her. Rebecca denied it all, claiming Selena slipped in on her own and everyone else backed her up.

When Everett finally showed up, Selena wanted to tell him how upset she was, but he cut her off, accusing her of causing trouble. He said, "Selena, if you want to keep being Mrs. Bennett, stop making a fuss!"

That was when she realized she wasn't the one Everett cared about. Right or wrong didn't matter; he was protective, but not of her, rather people of the Bennett family. Even after marrying him, she was still treated like an outsider.
